Blink 182

Will Young

It hasn’t all been about commercials and features at Panavision this year. 2004 has seen us supply cameras for many music videos as well. It’s great to see the creative and technical boundaries being pushed, despite some very tight budgets.

Recently Hilton Media facilitated the latest Blink 182 clip. The band was squeezed into Fox Studios between dates on their September Australian tour. DOP Brad Rushing and director Joseph Kahn flew in to complete the shoot. Previously the pair have teamed up on clips for Britney Spears, Eminem and Mariah Carey. Jamie Hilton was the executive producer.

Michael Gracey and Pete Commins of Babyfoot Productions teamed with producer Jacqui Louez and DOP Hugh Miller to shoot live action elements for UK Pop Idol winner Will Young. Six cameras were used simultaneously to achieve the innovative sequences which will be incorporated into the artist’s northern hemisphere winter tour.

  What is a Steady Test?
Panavision Australia Steady Test Rig When film is exposed in a motion picture camera, it is transported in an intermittent fashion. This means that each frame is briefly paused and held steady at the gate for the exposure of each frame. If the frame is not stopped in exactly the same position for each exposure, the picture will appear to have a distracting, weaving motion. This movement or unsteadiness is magnified with the magnification of the final release format. In the case of a feature film, this can be up to 10,000 times it’s original size.

To test a camera movement’s ability to properly register the film; a steady test is performed. This test involves shooting a chart with grid lines and then rewinding the film and shooting, or double exposing, the chart again on the same piece of film. Before shooting the second exposure, the chart is shifted to offset the grid lines. These two exposures create a reference point. The technician viewing the test can look for movement between the sets of grid lines, rather than movement of the grid lines themselves. This stops any unsteadiness of the viewing system from effecting the test.
